Even while planning the itinerary for Kuala Lumpur, all I could ever think about was their food. I have been in this city before and I knew fairly well that good food was inevitable so i I didn't mind coming back.
KL is one of the advance cities in Asia where life has gotten technologically ahead, yet the culture and the diversity that comes along with it have remained in tact. In fact, KL is a home not only to authentic Malay cuisine, but this is also the place where I have learned to love other cuisine that's relatively foreign to my tastebuds.
To anyone who plans to visit KL in the near future, by all means, I highly encourage you to treat your tastebuds to a gastronomic adventure. While the tourists spots such as the Petronas Towers and Batu Caves are definitely worth the visit, I suggest to make "food trip" your ultimate agenda.
A little insider note though, as a South East Asian city, indulge yourself in eating hawker style or some mid scale restaurants. Lucrative restaurants are expected to serve you with exquisite dishes, but these are also lucrative in the pocket, so I suggest you go out on the streets and experience Asia the way it should be. Not only does it feel truly "South East Asian", it also gives you some more bucks to spend for dessert!
I've written down some of my favorite dining spots within the main tourist spots in the city so you don't only enjoy a visual delight but a gustatory adventure too, hitting two birds with one stone.
Jalan Alor
Jalan Alor is indeed my favorite place on earth. On my previous post about Kuala Lumpur, I mentioned that I am a big fan of Sweet and Sour Pork and the first thing we did after arriving was to walk straight to Jalan Alor and start the feast. We chose a hotel that's very close to Jalan Alor without the need to jeopardise the level of comfort and cost efficiency, and we absolutely found one (Read story here).
When in Jalan Alor, do not be overwhelmed by the countless restaurants on the road serving mouth watering dishes, all of them will be helping you ease your suffering. But what you definitely should try are the Hookien Mee, Sweet and Sour Pork and Chicken Wings as your main course.
Try to walk straight ahead and find the dim sum shop with a mark of "Kuala Lumpur Food Trails". They serve one of the best Hakaws!
For desserts, the coconut ice cream by Sangkaya is a must try and choose your toppings, served on a coconut shell with coconut meat, you can also ask for a free glass of coconut juice.
Jalan Alor has so much to offer and if you are up for a night of pure gustatory delight, there's so much more to eat on the sides:
Batu Caves
The Batu Caves is best enjoyed in the morning and a good way to start the day is to try Indian breakfast at Restoran Rani. As a Hindu temple, the Indian community is very alive in this area and they share so much influence in the neighbourhood. I must say that i'm not huge fan of Indian Cuisine but dining here definitely changed my perception.
An unconventional breakfast that made me crave for it every morning, Thosai, Samosas, Roti Poratta and Potato Dhal.
Ain Arab or Arab Street
The best shawarma is very easy to find in Kuala Lumpur, head to Bukit Bintang and turn right to Ain Arab, you'll find a queue of people lining up for famous Shawarma!
Bukit Bintang
Aside from Jalan Alor, there are two other food stops you need to try within the area.
The first is Lot 10 Hutong just along the street of Bukit Bintang at Lot 10, you can easily spot it because of an interesting facade leading to an underground food festival.
Taking photos are not allowed inside the hall but just imagine an entire underground full of food stations of varied asian cuisine. We tried noodle soup and roasted duck.
The other one is a humble shop located at the end of Jalan Sahabat just a few minutes walk from Jalan Alor. This food stall maybe uncommon to tourists but locals know this shop for their Wanton Mee which they serve for decades now. We accidentally stumbled upon this shop and we shared a table with some locals who told us all about the old man who has been preparing this dish for a long time. This doesn't look like the tidiest kitchen but it sure it does give you the most flavorful Wanton Mee you've ever tasted.
The shop opens by 10:00 PM and there are just a few tables so you better come in early as a lot of locals flock this shop as soon as it opens.
Central Market
Central Market is a home not just for the shoppers but for local Malaysian food lovers as well. Old Town Cafe serves a variety of local food paired with their famous Teh Tarik.
Probably the reason why I would keep coming back to Kuala Lumpur is the endless possibility to discover new and good food. It's just a melting pot of all things delicious and I guarantee that once you've tried to eat here, you can't stop coming back for more.
